We all know that politicians tend to play around the edges of the truth, especially when they are seeking election, which seems to be most of the time these days; however, egregious lies have become more commonplace in recent years, fueled by ideological battles over the future of our nation and the role of government.  In the post-Gringrich partisan world, vision of government varies from “nurturing the greater good” of the Founders, along with today’s moderates and progressives to “every man for himself” of the modern day conservative.  In order to foster the perceived necessity of “every man for himself”, the Tea Party funders and GOP strategists do their best to foment outrage of the masses over fake and/or distorted issues, creating crises where none exist, Read the rest of this entry

A Fitting 9/11 Tribute

9/11 Memorial Ceremony, Woodstock, Vermont

This morning, I attended a 9/11 memorial ceremony on the Green in Woodstock, Vermont which was organized by the town’s emergency services organizations.  The morning started with a breakfast at the Masonic Temple; at 8:15, everyone gathered walked to the Green for the ceremony.  Veteran NBC News reporter, Bob Hager, recalled his experiences during those days 10 years ago, followed by ringing of all the church bells in the town, 4 of which were cast by Paul Revere’s foundry.  What followed was especially poignant Read the rest of this entry

In Rick Perry’s Texas, Firefighters Forced To Pay For Gear, Engine Fuel.

One of the biggest lies that the media allows right wing conservatives to continually get away with is that government cannot create jobs.  Eric Cantor, John Boehner, and every GOP presidential candidate repeats the lie as a mantra, to the point that many Americans (read Tea Partiers) now believe it.  Nothing, of course, could be farther from the truth and no knowledgeable person actually believes it, even many who repeat it.  The falsehood is so obvious that even as Republicans repeat it, they relentlessly work to reduce government jobs in a coordinated effort to keep the unemployment rate as high, and the economy as weak, as possible Read the rest of this entry
